The city unit of Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday staged a demonstration in front of the GVMC Complex opposite Coromandel Fertilisers in Sriharipuram, demanding that `Visakhapatnam city be saved from `fangs' of pollution.'
Addressing the gathering which included the local residents besides BJP leaders and party workers, city BJP president M. Nagendra said the city was facing health hazard since all the major industries like HPCL, Coromandel Fertilisers, Zinc, Andhra Petro, Rain Calcining, Essar, Vizag port and Gangavaram port were located in the `bowl' area. The industries caused atmospheric pollution which led to respiratory diseases, he stated. The BJP launched an agitation in the year 2010 against pollution in industrial belt after which the district administration held a meeting with the pollution causing industries and prepared an action plan to reduce pollution levels, he recalled.
“But since the plan was not implemented by the major industries, we are still suffering. HPCL is using low grade crude oil which contains high sulphur and this is resulting in increased pollution levels. Now it is going for expansion. It would be better if expansion is taken up away from residential area,” he said.
BJP national executive committee member K. Haribabu said the party was not against industrial development but insisted that their effluents and wastes should not inconvenience the people. Proper pollution control equipment should be installed, he said. Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha national general secretary PVN Madhav spoke.
