Shots fired at policemen on guard duty

VISAKHAPATNAM: Five persons suspected to be members of the CPI (Maoist) made a vain bid to attack the camp office of the Superintendent of Police V.V. Srinivasa Rao here around Monday midnight.

A couple of them riding a scooter fired a few shots at the policemen on guard duty and the latter returned the fire. However, there were no casualties. The SP's camp office is located on the road leading to the Andhra University Engineering College campus from Waltair Main road and the gate at the entrance of the road is closed during nights. The suspected naxalites could not cross the locked gate.

Suspicious movements

The camp office is located some 100 metres from the gate and armed policemen patrol the road from SP's camp office up to the SP's office throughout the night. In between are located residences of Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Vizag Range), the City Commissioner of Police and several other top officials. A short distance away from the SP's office is the III Town Police Station.

It is learnt that two persons were seen moving under suspicious circumstances near the locked gate and escaped on a two-wheeler when the patrolling party moved close. Later, two persons were seen riding a two-wheeler on the main road and reportedly abused the policemen and fired two or three shots at the policemen while speeding away. Meanwhile, the security personnel on duty at the DIG's residence were also alerted. It was reported that a person was seen walking on the compound wall of the DIG's residence but he jumped into the engineering college ground and ran away as the policemen fired a few shots at him.
