KARIMNAGAR: The police on Wednesday arrested a Bangladeshi national Shahnaz Begum for suppressing her religion, nationality and giving false information for acquiring a passport posing as an Indian national.

Superintendent of Police N. Shivashankar Reddy said Shahnaz, a native of Jungalia, Mohammadpur of Jessore in Bangladesh visited Rekulapalli village of Sarangapur mandal on January 5, 2010 on a six-month visa granted by Bangladesh and stayed with her husband Medi Shankar.

She had applied for an Indian passport by suppressing her original name, religion, nationality and also obtained a residential certificate from the tahsildar's office.

When she applied for the passport, the special branch police found that she was a Bangladeshi national.

During interrogation, she confessed to having married Shankar in Dubai in 2007. After they returned to their respective countries, she visited Rekulapalli to join Medi Shankar.
