Human chains and rasta-rokos marked the bandh that was called by the central trade unions on the second day in the district on Thursday. However, unions affiliated to CITU and AITUC organised protests separately.

While AITUC joined hands with INTUC for the rasta-roko at RTC complex here, CITU organised a similar protest at the Collector’s Office junction. Banks, insurance, postal and BSNL observed total bandh on the second day causing severe inconvenience to people. RTC could operate over 50 per cent of its fleet as employees affiliated to employees union and Staff and Workers’ Federation participated in the strike.

Barring Bobbili, at other places the bandh was peaceful. At Bobbili, police used force to disperse protesters at RTC Complex when the vehicle in which Parvathipuram ASP Navdeep Singh Grewal was going towards Vizianagaram and was trapped in traffic jam. Four protesters were arrested and released later.

The unions had been demanding that the government control price rise, stop disinvestment of profit-making PSUs and privatisation of banks and insurance sectors.
