GUNTUR: The All-India Congress Committee has re-nominated only 8 out of the 18 sitting MLAs and two MPs out of four from Guntur district, but increased the number of women candidates in the coming general elections. Three out of four ministers from Guntur district have been re-nominated, but at majority for the other places either the candidates nominated are ‘outsiders’ or new to politics.

Rayapati Sambasiva Rao has retained his Guntur Lok Sabha seat, Tenali MP Vallabhaneni Balashourie not only got himself nominated from Narsaraopet, but was also successful in getting people of his choice nominated in three Assembly segments. While Bapatla MP Daggubati Purandeswari has been shifted to Visakhapatnam, Minister for Transport has chosen to contest from Guntur West. The Bapatla LS seat that is reserved for SC has Union Minister for State Panabaka Lakshmi, an outsider for Guntur district, as the Congress nominee.

Minister for Infrastructure and Ports Mopidevi Venkata Ramana Rao after losing his Kuchenapudi seat in delimitation has been fielded from neighbouring Repalle. The sitting Repalle MLA Devineni Mallikarjun has not been nominated from any place.

Minister for Rajiv Vidya Mission Murugudu Hanumantha Rao has not been re-nominated from Mangalagiri, but his relative Kandru Kamala would represent the party. Minister for Civil Supplies Kasu Venkata Krishna Reddy has been retained from the same place.

Other sitting MLAs getting renominated are Tadikonda (SC) - Dokka Manikya Varaprasada Rao, Chilakaluripet - Marri Rajasekhar, Tenali - Nadendla Manohar, Sattenapalle - Yerram Venkateswar Reddy, and Gade Venkata Reddy from Bapatla.

Minister for Transport Kanna Lakshmi Narayana had proposed the name of Ramakrishna Reddy to replace him in Pedakurapadu constituency, but a realtor’s wife Sheik Noorjahan from Hyderabad gets the ticket. At neighbouring Gurazala sitting MLA Janga Krishna Murthy has been replaced by a Guntur-based paediatrician (BC) Ala Venkateswara Rao, and Macherla sitting MLA Pinelli Lakshma Reddy has been replaced by his brother’s son Pinelli Ramakrishna Reddy. Another newcomer is Guntur-based Chebrolu Narendra grandson of former Minister Chebrolu Hanumaiah. Guntur East sitting MLA Sheik Subhani has been replaced by city Congress president Mastan Vali. After two futile attempts M. Leeladhar is successful in getting nominated from Ponnur, while SC, ST Commission Chairman M. Nagarjuna another newcomer is nominated from Vemuru (SC). Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency member from Phirangipuram Sucharita, who is wife of IT Assistant Commissioner Dayasagar, has been named for newly reserved Prattipadu (SC).
