Former Indian skipper comes down heavily on turncoats
Former cricket captain and senior Congress leader Md. Azharuddin’s visit to Nellore here on Wednesday turned out to be a good opportunity for the local party leaders to reclaim their lost base among minorities in Nellore City, Nellore Rural and Atmakur Assembly constituencies.
The Congress leaders made provocative statements as was evident from the attack launched by Anam Vivekananda Reddy who said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would not allow the minorities to live peacefully if it was voted to power in this election.
When Mr. Vivekananda Reddy asked Mr. Azharuddin to smash BJP leaders like he would hit a cricket ball, the latter responded in a lighter vein saying that if all the people would come together in this election and hit it, the BJP would be nowhere then. He stressed the need for electing the Congress nominees as this was the only party which could solve the problems of the poor effectively.
Md. Azharuddin lashed out at the leaders who left the Congress and joined different parties.
He said those leaders who wanted to become chief ministers quickly would not be able to render real service to the people.
Dwelling on the track record of the Congress, Mr. Azharuddin said some parties like the Janata Party and the BJP emerged on the political scene but they had failed to live up to the people’s expectations. Real development would be possible only under the Congress rule, he said.
Mr. Azharuddin said there was no great deal of development in Gujarat as was being claimed by BJP leaders while referring to NDA’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
“During my visit as a cricketer, I saw not much development in that State.
Poor people’s problems should be solved for claiming any progress,” he said.
