“Some 6 to 7 per cent of the total population in the district, according to a survey report, has hypertension (high blood pressure) and the percentage is increasing,” said U. Swarajya Lakshmi, district Medical and Health Officer at a press conference on Wednesday.

To create awareness among the people on high blood pressure and complications associated with it, a rally would be taken out on the World Health Day (April 7) from RTC Complex to DM&HO Office where doctors would address the gathering. Dr. Swarajya Lakshmi said that due to stress, changes in food habits, high levels of alcohol consumption, smoking, lack of physical activity, etc. the number of cases had been increasing. Those apart, high levels of salt intake would also cause hypertension, she added.

She said that under the national programme for health care of senior citizens, cluster level camps would be conducted from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on that day. Specialists would examine them.
