Residents from 23 slums around the immediate catchment of Hussainsagar participate in walk
HYDERABAD: Coinciding with the World Environment Day, a series of activities were organised by the government departments, voluntary groups and other organisations here on Friday.
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) which has taken up the Hussainsagar lake improvement project organised a Lake Walk from Necklace Road to Sanjeevaiah Park which was flagged off by the HMDA Commissioner K.S. Jawahar Reddy. About 600 residents from 23 slums around the immediate catchment of the lake participated in the walk. Rangoli, snake show, environment quiz and other activities too were conducted during the programme. An awareness programme was held highlighting the solid-waste management and health and sanitation maintenance in the lake surroundings in which voluntary groups including APSA, CARE, CEE, Chatri & Sukuki Exnora took part. A poster on ‘Butterflies of Hussainsagar’ was released by the MA&UD Principal Secretary C.V.S.K. Sarma on the occasion. The World Wide Fund for Nature-India in association with HMDA, APPCB, Tourism Development Corporation and others organised a cycle rally which was simultaneously flagged from Charminar, Mehdipatnam and Secunderabad YMCA. More than 120 cadets of Andhra Pradesh Police Academy and students from 50 schools among others took part in the rally.
A green exhibition with more than 35 stalls was also held. The ‘Go Green’ campaign of Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM concluded with participation of film actor Sumanth and music director Ramana Gogula at Prasad’s IMAX on Friday. They gave away saplings to fans at the event attended by the Tata Indicom COO Ramakrishna.
