GUNTUR: About 10 students of School of Planning and Architecture, Vijayawada, now functioning on Acharya Nagarjuna University campus allegedly beat an M.Com First year student with an iron rod on Friday night on the campus, which led to Mangalagiri police personnel picking up five students for questioning.

ANU Boys Hostel Warden Johnson said that at about 8 p.m. 10 students had allegedly stopped Siva Koteswara Rao while he was returning to his room and beat him for his alleged involvement in another incident involving the SPA students a week ago.

When the M.Com student of the ANU asked them to give complaint to the university authorities if they suspected his hand in another incident in which an SPA boy was allegedly beaten and a girl misbehaved when they were near the indoor stadium on the campus.

School of Planning students and authorities allegedly did not bring this to the notice of the ANU authorities and no formal police complaint was made in that case. The warden said that the boy was sent to Government General Hospital in Guntur for first aid and was out of danger though he received injury on the head.

Police personnel came to the university for further inquiry and identification of SPA students who stay on the campus and were involved in the incident.

About 70 SPA students stay on ANU campus. Meanwhile, the university authorities have announced that the NAAC Committee would visit the ANU on April 16, 17 and 18 for inspecting it as the ANU had applied for re-accreditation. The university had provided Rs.10,000 to each department to equip them with all statutory measures when the NAAC team visits.

Chiarman of Siris Group of Industries of Vijayawada has announced a donation of Rs.1 crore for the construction of a building for the college of pharmacy on the campus.

He had donated Rs.50 lakh for a Yoga Centre two years ago. The State Government has released block grant of Rs.3.87 crores for the ANU.
