HYDERABAD: So far, nearly 800 acres of assigned land has been surrendered to Government at various places in the State by about 500 persons.

Officials furnished this information to Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy as he reviewed the implementation of the decision, at a meeting with them at the State Secretariat, here on Friday.

Dr. Reddy instructed them to take proper steps for a mass campaign so that those possessing assigned lands could surrender them voluntarily by the close of the 90-day deadline in April, avoiding penal action.

Recovery of lands

He noted that 50,000 persons were in possession of 14 to 16 lakh acres of assigned lands, which should be recovered.

"The Government is keen to immediately take over these lands for re-distribution to the landless poor", he said.

No decision was adopted on the method of regularising the occupied lands, sources said.
