Though the girl attended classes even in an advanced stage of pregnancy, the hostel authorities were in the dark
KHAMMAM: One of the inmates of the ashram school for tribal girls at Pedamidisileru village has become an unwed mother at the age of just 13. She gave birth to a child recently after returning to her parents for vacation. The ninth standard girl was exploited allegedly by a student from junior college in Charla mandal.
Though the girl attended classes even in an advanced stage of pregnancy, the hostel authorities were in the dark. She returned to her parents after attending the Independence Day celebrations. Neither the warden nor the Principal could keep track of the girl. So was the case with the health worker in-charge of the hostel.
The episode came to light when the girl delivered a baby boy two weeks ago. As the baby was too weak, she was referred to the nutrition rehabilitation centre at Bhadrachalam wherein the baby was kept in incubator for a few days. Allegedly at the behest of her parents, the girl abandoned her baby and left for her village.
Rajasekhar, in-charge of the rehabilitation centre, has been in touch with ITDA Project Officer Budha Prakash for a decision on the fate of the baby.
Enquiries were pouring in for adoption of the child. The scope for restoring the child back to the mother was also being examined.
The college student who was said to have raped the girl, had reportedly disowned her. His parents were ready to pay any price to get rid of the girl, but were reluctant to accept her into their family. Tribal welfare officer Parthasarathy conducted a thorough probe and submitted the report to the Project Officer.
The ashram school headmaster, warden and the ANM have been placed under suspension in connection with the incident.
