TRS activist attempts self-immolation; Congress MLA accuses TRS of trying to eliminate him
MLA Saraiah says he is a staunch supporter of separate Telangana
‘TRS resorting to cheap tricks to gain political mileage'
WARANGAL: A Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) activist tried to immolate himself by dousing kerosene which also spilt on the Congress MLA Basawaraju Saraiah during the Praja Patham programme which led to commotion in the town.
One K. Ranjith of Kothawada in 52nd division of the Municipal Corporation barged into the crowd that gathered around Mr. Saraiah and suddenly doused himself with kerosene from a bottle hidden in his shirt. An alert Circle Inspector, Surender, pushed him away and the kerosene spilt on all those standing near him, the MLA.
Shocked by the event, Congress workers shouted slogans against the TRS leaders and workers who gathered there in large numbers to stall the meeting demanding the MLA's resignation in support of separate Telangana. The police had a tough time controlling the crowds. They scouted away the TRS leaders and arrested the youth and 12 others.
Condemning the incident, Mr. Saraiah accused the TRS of trying to eliminate him unable to stomach the popularity he enjoyed among the people in his constituency. He said he would not succumb to pressure tactics and claimed that he was staunch supporter of separate Telangana. “Being a senior member of national party, I should abide by my party's guidelines. Nobody can question my credibility,” he said demanding action against those responsible for attack on him.
The Congress leader accused the TRS leaders of resorting cheap tricks to gain political mileage by creating sensation.
Immediately, the Congress workers came onto roads and enforced a bandh in some localities in the town and burnt the effigies of TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao at several places.
Meanwhile, police registered a case of attempt to suicide under Section 309 on Ranjith and cases on 12 other TRS workers under Section 151.
However, the incident only exposed lapses in the security being provided to the VIPs in the town during the Praja Patham. It was learnt that senior leaders from New Delhi also called up Mr. Saraiah to know more about the incident.
Mr. Saraiah, who moves a lot in the constituency, had become an easy target for the CPI, CPI (M) and TRS leaders who were mobilising crowds and disrupting all the meetings being attended by him.
