Rajahmundry: MP Vundavalli Arun Kumar has appealed to Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee to convert the 100-year-old Havelock Bridge across the Godavari into an integrated tourism development project.
Making his submission in Parliament on Friday, Mr, Arun Kumar said that the bridge was constructed to connect Rajahmundry and Kovvuru. It was not being used since 1997 as it had served its utility.
Mr. Arun Kumar said the State government was willing to make the structure a tourist attraction under the BOT basis along with the Railways and the Municipal Corporation of Rajahmundry. The corporation had also passed a resolution expressing its willingness to contribute Rs.10 lakhs as deposit to the Railways to take it a monument. However, the Railways was not coming forward to handover the structure to the State government, he said.
He said the State was ready to pay Rs.1 lakh through the Tourism Department every year to the Railways.
