GUNTUR: As a tribute to Dr. Anna Sarah Kugler, who set up Guntur's first hospital, in June 1897, a not-for-profit organisation Karunya Healthcare & Academic Foundation, proposes to revive it by rebuilding and modernising by November 29, the date on which it was set up originally.
Kugler came to Guntur in 1883 and did a Yeoman service here and set up the hospital, which was the best in Andhra Pradesh between Visakhapatnam and Madras till recently. Monday happens to be her 144th birth anniversary and the trust MD P. Dayachari, former Tobacco Board Chairman, announced the setting up of the hospital with all super specialties by November.
At a get-together of all prominent doctors, politicians and philanthropists, a prayer and ground breaking ceremony was organised. This foundation proposes to set up 150-bed hospital in the existing building in the first phase. In the second phase 75,000 sq.ft. of built-up area in the 9.1 acre site in Bharatpeta in the city would house all super specialties with another 150 beds inclusive of a 70-bed ICU. Other promoters are Samatha and Manjula Ponnekanti. The venturewas blessed by district ministers Mopidevi Venkata Ramana, Dokka Manikya Varaprasad, Guntur MP Rayapati Sambasiva Rao, ZP Chairperson Kuchipudi Vijaya and local MLA Mastan Vali.
