VISAKHAPATNAM: Scores of visitors to the Ramakrishna Beach had an unusual experience of the fire-fighting demonstrations, organised by the AP Fire Services Department in association with industries from the city, as part of the Fire Services Week celebrations on Sunday.
The display provided an opportunity to the public to know the prowess of the fire personnel in tackling fires of different types. The highlight of the demo was Bronto Sky lift (hydraulic platform) that was newly acquired by the Fire Services Department.
Men, women and children craned their necks to see the platform that seemed to reach for the skies. It was new experience for them as the new equipment, imported from Finland, can reach up to 18 floors. Interestingly, people watching from the balconies of apartment complexes also had to lift their heads to see the top of platform that seemed to hang in the sky.
Delight to watch
It was a delight to watch the national Tricolour fluttering from the platform. Some of the visitors were seen capturing the scene on their mobiles while others were armed with cameras to catch the action.
The fire tender of NTPC displayed sprinkling of water from revolving branch pipes, while the one from Visakhapatnam Port Trust gave a demo of the use of high expansion foam to put out oil fire.
The fire tender from HPCL gave a jet spray demo and use of high expansion foam to put out oil fire in a jiffy. The foam spread out on the ground and remained there for a long time. The foam disintegrated and was carried by the breeze in different directions.
People watching from the beach were asked on the mike not to panic as the foam was eco-friendly and doesn't cause any harm even if it falls in the eyes.
The fire tender from Naval Dockyard put out a gas fire with a water jet. Coromandel Fertilisers Limited displayed its multi purpose vehicle that is equipped with an automatic oscillating monitor.
Visakhapatnam Steel Plant displayed its snorkel hydraulic platform and Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) also displayed its fire tender. The grand finale of the show was a dazzling display of fireworks.
Children clapped in glee as the fireworks display lit up the evening sky in different hues.
Earlier, Director General of Fire Services Aruna Bahuguna flagged off a rally by the fire tenders on the Beach Road. District Collector J. Syamala Rao, Police Commissioner J. Purnachandra Rao, District Fire Officer Narasimham, Fire Officers P.V. Ramana and Surendranath were among those who participated.
Ms. Aruna Bahuguna said every fire starts with a spark and negligence was the cause of major fires. She said 1,300 firemen would be recruited in the State soon.
