The Hindu tourney is an important event in sports calendar of the city: VPT Chairman

VISAKHAPATNAM: The 17 {+t} {+h} edition of The Hindu trophy, the annual prize money cricket tournament being organised without a break, concluded at the Port stadium here on Sunday with the Visakhapatnam Port Sports Council lifting the trophy for the second year in succession.

Fine batting and bowling were on display as the VPSC and the Vizag Colts, a former winner of the glittering silver trophy, fought for the top honours in an interesting final.

Even as the cloudy sky and a summer shower threatened the game, VPSC sailed past the target of 211 runs with four wickets to spare.

The publishers of The Hindu, Kasturi and Sons, is sponsoring the tournament and the Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association (VDCA) is organising it on its behalf.

Nine centuries and a hat-trick marked this year's tournament.

Visakhapatnam Port Trust Chairman Ajeya Kallam appreciated The Hindu for sponsoring the tournament, which is an important event in the sports calendar of the city.

Responding to a request made earlier by VDCA vice-president P.R. Narayanaswami to provide a site for cricket grounds in the city or in rural areas, Mr. Ajeya Kallam promised to take up the issue with the district authorities and others concerned.

Mr. Ajeya Kallam agreed that the rural talent must be nurtured.

VPT was always supporting sports and sportspersons and would continue the same, he said.

VDCA secretary K. Parthasaradhi gave details of the tournament and pointed out that the nine centuries scored during the tournament, two of them by V. Lenin of Cavaliers C.C. and the hat-trick, were the best performances seen so far.

Chief of Bureau of The Hindu B. Prabhakara Sharma and Regional General Manager of The Hindu T.V. Suresh also spoke and thanked the VDCA for successfully organising the tournament all these years.

VDCA vice-presidents D.S. Varma and D. Sanjeev and joint secretary J.K.M. Raju participated.
