Asks SSC students to work hard to secure good marks
KAIKALURU (Krishna district): District Collector Peeyush Kumar on Tuesday said that in adherence to the Supreme Court verdict, the district administration would protect ecology of Kolleru Lake and provide work to the fishermen of the region who had lost their livelihood in the wake of ‘Operation Kolleru’.
The Collector stayed put at the welfare hostel for BC boys in Kolletikota village of Kaikaluru mandal as part of ‘Pallenidra’ (a night halt in a village) programme on Monday night.
On Tuesday morning, while sharing breakfast with the hostel inmates, he interacted with them and enquired about basic amenities there. He wanted the 10th class students to work hard to secure good marks. Those securing above 400 would be given a seat in corporate colleges, he assured.
Mr. Peeyush Kumar later attended a meeting of women self-help groups.
Referring to the slew of measures initiated to protect the ecology of Kolleru Lake in accordance with the Supreme Court verdict and the Centre’s directive, he said that as per the guidelines of the ‘Kolleru Package’ announced in 2006, each of the ‘eligible’ family was paid a sum of Rs. 1.5 lakh.
The 60 families that were yet to be paid the ‘compensation’ would receive the same at the earliest.
Funds for bridge
Reacting to the villagers’ plea for construction of a bridge, the Collector said funds to the tune of Rs. 9 crore had been sanctioned for the purpose. Tenders would be called at the earliest to commence work on the project.
Pointing out that the Kolleru region had 961 acres of ‘jirayati’ lands, Mr. Peeyush Kumar wanted the Agriculture Department officials to educate farmers on traditional farming practices. He also warned them against use of chemical fertilisers.
Joint Collector B. Ramaiah, Eluru range CFO Sinha, Joint Director of Agriculture Srirama Murthy and a host of other officials were present.
