VIJAYAWADA: An infant baby boy was found missing from the maternity ward of the Government General Hospital located on the old premises of the hospital at Hanumanpet in the early hours of Sunday. The issue came to the light when the baby boy’s mother Challa Yesamma, 30, woke up from sleep at 5 a.m. After searching for the infant on the hospital premises for an hour, the woman, along with her husband Sivayya, went to the Governorpet police station and lodged a complaint with the police, suspecting the involvement of the hospital staff in the incident. Yesamma, a resident of Kankipadu and a roadside vendor of fancy articles, was admitted to the hospital in the early hours of January 19 for delivery. The doctors performed caesarean on her the same night. She was being shifted to the labour ward the next day. The infant was last seen by Yesamma around 4 a.m. on Sunday, when she gave a breastfeed. After sleeping for a while, she woke up around 5 a.m. and found the infant missing. A team of police headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police P. Prakasa Rao swung into action and began questioning the hospital staff. The police were clueless about the accused even by the evening. A case was registered and investigation was going on.

Vijayawada Central MLA Malladi Vishnu and former minister Devineni Rajasekhar (Nehru) visited the hospital and spoke to the parents of the missing infant.
