ONGOLE: Tension gripped Singarayakonda where an engineering student attacked a girl student for not responding to his overtures and jumped off the college building in a bid to commit suicide. Both of them were admitted to hospital.

According to police, Hemavanth Reddy (20) was studying second year B.Tech in Malineni Lakshmaiah College of Engineering at Singarayakonda. He fell in love with Sravanthi, who is studying third year B.Tech in the same college. Both of them belonged to nearby Ulavapadu village.

Hemavanth has been after Sravanthi to accept his love for the last four months. Sravanthi brought her plight to the notice of her parents who counselled her to be patient. She informed them on Monday night that Hemavanth was crossing the limits.

Meanwhile, Hemavanth came to know that Sravanthi was getting married soon. He encountered her in the college on Tuesday morning and made a last ditch effort to win her over.

As she flatly refused his proposal, the enraged Hemavanth attacked her with a blade causing a slit on her right neck.

Some students who noticed the attack tried to nab him. But Hemavanth ran away and jumped off the first floor of the college building and broke his spinal chord.

The college management rushed Sravanthi, who was bleeding in neck, to a private hospital at Kandukur and Hemavanth to a hospital in Ongole. Sravanthi is recovering from the trauma. Hemavanth was referred to Guntur for better medical aid. Police registered a case.
