Riders from Hyderabad Bicycling Club hit the roads
Hyderabad: Early in the morning and an azure sky, a blur of red, blue and white jerseys zooms by on the quiet streets of Kothaguda. Their shoulders hunched and legs pedalling away furiously and effortlessly, a group of cyclists move in perfect synchronisation as the passing motorists slow down to wave back.
Led by Shay Mandel, who moved to Hyderabad from Israel, the group rides under the banner of Hyderabad Bicycling Club (HBC), which took shape in October last. “This is a perfect platform for those who are keen to cycle but do not know where to begin. We ride on Wednesdays and Saturdays and take different routes every time we set out,” says Shay, who has been cycling internationally for over 20 years and is working with Microsoft, Hyderabad.
Inspired by the Cophenhagenize movement that motivates people to use bicycles in urban areas in Copenhagen, Denmark, the club has over a 100 members who cycle together on weekends.
Bike rides are generally organised in areas surrounding Gachibowli and Secunderabad.
“We have a lot of members from Secunderabad as well and during the weekends we set out on long rides,” says Shay.
Moreover, the club cycles long distance during weekends, covering more than 100 kms per day. “We’ve cycled to Medak, Nizampet and we are planning to go to Himayatsagar this Saturday,” says Sudhanshu, member of the club.
Also, many members commute to office on a bicycle. “I have been biking to office for over one and a half months and haven’t used my car. A few months ago, when the petrol strike was on, I rode to my office from home,” says Sandeep Pathak, a new member of the club.
The club puts its forthcoming cycling schedules on their website; ‘ www.meetup.com/hyderabadbicyclingclub’ where the time, date and areas are specified on the site. Don’t you feel like joining them?
