Hyderabad: Displaying the tough and no-nonsense approach he is known for, the new DGP A.K. Mohanty warned policemen that partiality would not be tolerated and announced a series of measures to conduct free and fair elections, including a special drive against arms and explosives and unauthorised sale of liquor. Announcing the details at a press conference here on Wednesday after a video conference with IGs, DIGs and SPs on the election arrangements, he said special measures were being taken to prevent rigging at booth level. Also pending cases which have a bearing on law and order and elections, including non-bailable warrants (NBWs), would be immediately disposed off. “No wrong doer will be allowed to go scot-free”, he asserted.

A special drive against arms and explosives would be launched from Thursday.

The situation in the faction-ridden Rayalaseema was analysed and aberrations like intimidation of voters would be prevented. Stating that he believed in conventional and professional policing to give better results, he said the SPs have been instructed to take all measures to ensure that policing was responsive and visible in the fields. All the police officers have been asked to be accessible on telephone and respond to calls from public. Other steps to infuse confidence in the public include surveillance on anti-social elements, including those involved in previous poll offences.
