Fifteen members of the Kalalawada Slum Leaders' Federation, a Self-Help Group, have been successfully running a small hotel, ‘Akshya Swashakti Canteen', here since March 30.
Each member invested Rs.15,000 to launch this self-employment venture, which serves homely food.
The canteen, which is run from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., offers tiffins, lunch and evening snacks. While the tiffin items cost Rs.10-Rs.15 each, lunch is provided at Rs.40. Each jowar roti costs Rs.4 only. The SHG members prepare a variety of pickles, papads, and eatables such as mixture.
This small eatery which is located on a rented premises consisting three rooms is slightly congested and can accommodate only limited number of people. But, the customers seem to be happy with the food that is served.
J. Aruna, the SHG president says, “We started this venture to earn income for ourselves. We also wanted to provide good and tasty food at reasonable rates to the poor.”
The group's resource person, R. Vijaya Madhavi says, “We are looking forward to government's assistance in the form of finance or provision of infrastructure, so that we can set up a bigger eatery. We have plans to start our catering services.”
The canteen's prime location near government offices, the rural police station and the bus stand proves to be of great advantage to the SHG group, as a lot of people approaching government departments can avail the canteen's services.
