Over 500 teams to be deployed

HYDERABAD: Efforts are on to distribute nearly 10 lakh Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) in various Assembly segments in twin cities by March 20, a release from the district administration said on Monday. Over 500 teams, consisting of over 1,000 people, would be deployed in eight Assembly segments, mostly urban areas, to distribute EPICs from March 17 onwards, the release said.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner and Ex-Officio Secretary to State Election Commission S. P. Singh, during a review meeting, asked the returning officers and municipal commissioner to involve the local residential welfare associations for distribution of the cards.

Mr. Singh asked the officers to give top priority to slum dwellers as they may not have any of the listed 13 documents while exercising their franchise. Mr. Singh asked the officers to make all out efforts to distribute and meticulously record the reasons for missing cards, those which are not handed over due to non-availability of voters, release said.

He suggested utilising the services of UCD staff while locating areas as their services are immensely useful in locating vulnerable areas particularly the urban slums, release said.

Ranga Reddy District Collector M. Danakishore informed that distribution of total cards will be ensured by handling at least 10,000 cards per day. While acknowledging the enormity of the task of distributing 20 lakh cards within a short span of time, Mr. Singh asked the returning officers to rise to the challenge to achieve tangible results.
