KHAMMAM: Stanmbhadri Sambaralu -- festival of Khammam -- was off to a colourful start here on Wednesday. Union Minister of State for Tourism Renuka Chowdhury declared the festival open after formally inaugurating a water-based adventure and entertainment event in Palair Lake, 30 km from the town. The Military College of Engineering organised canoeing and kayaking as part of the event in the lake.

Addressing the function, she said Khammam, which had been endowed with a good number of huge reservoirs, had the potential to become an international tourist spot. Describing it as a district of lakes she said all-out efforts were being made to develop it into a place of importance on the tourist map. The idea for the water-based adventure in Palair Lake struck her on her very first visit to the district, she said and thanked the Military College of Engineering team for coming all the way to the district for making the event a great success.

She said a light and sound festival would be organised soon in Khammam. District Collector Rajendra Narendra Nimje said that Khammam festival was gaining importance year by year. The water-based adventure in Palair Lake and the rock-climbing event at Khammam Fort gave a new dimension to the festival. Khammam, with its serene locales was an ideal place for nature-lovers.

All its lakes are to the brim and free of pollution and it is sure to be a delightful experience for participants in the water-based adventure.

A rally of cultural troupes was organised from the Stambhadri temple to the Taruni Haat on the occasion. The tribal teams, inching forward, dancing to drumbeats attracted huge crowds all along.
