Three-day workshop on agricultural statistics inaugurated

ONGOLE: Joint Director of Statistics, Suryanarayana Murthi, has stressed the need to maintain `adangal`, the basic land record with crop particulars at village level, properly as all agricultural statistics are based on it.

Addressing a regional workshop on agricultural statistics held here on Tuesday, Mr. Murthi said that agriculture contributed significantly to the per capita income and reflects economic growth in the country.

Chief Planning Officers, assistant directors and deputy assistant directors from Prakasam, Kadapa, Chittor, Kurnool, Mahaboobnagar and Medak districts participated in the three-day workshop which began here on Tuesday. District Collector B. Udaya Lakshmi inaugurated the workshop.

Crop forecast

Mr. Suryanarayana Murthi exhorted the statistical officers to estimate the area and productivity of different crops correctly to estimate the income generated in agriculture sector, which is in the primary sector of our economy. Agricultural census should be conducted both in kharif and rabi seasons to know the area under different crops. Crop cutting experiments should be conducted to estimate productivity. He asked the participants to report agricultural statistics on time.

They should also provide crop forecast and advance estimates.

Joint Director of Statistics, P. Narasimhulu and V. Pratima, deputy director also addressed the workshop which discussed theoretical approaches as well as practical illustrations including field work.
