Srikakulam: Unlike in other parts of the State, the groundwater level in the district has been increasing.

The hydrograph of monthly average depth to water level and rainfall during the last five years prepared by the local office here shows substantial upward movement.

In 2001-02, the rainfall was 1,034 mm which was 11 per cent short of normal rainfall followed by 31 per cent shortfall the following year. The year 2003-04 and 2005-06 saw surplus rainfall, registering 1,329 mm and 1,112 rainfall respectively.

The Groundwater Department here has been monitoring the level. Groundwater use is limited in the district and the number of borewells is less. Large stretches are hard rock areas, which minimises use of groundwater.
