VIJAYAWADA: In a freak suicide case, an 18-year-old girl pledged her eyes to a local eye bank and left a note for her parents pleading them to donate her kidneys to someone who needed them before resorting to the extreme step. The victim, Duggineni Harsha Vardhini, was a resident of Santhinagar in Payakapuram.
The police said that Harsha Vardhini was elder daughter of Venkata Ratnam, who worked in a gas company.
Her mother Vijayalakshmi had a readymade garments shop, which was in losses. Despite financial problems, the parents managed to secure admission for Harsha Vardhini in Intermediate (Bi.P.C) course in Sri Chaitanya College at Chuttugunta, a couple of years ago. On Monday, when the Intermediate results were declared, Harsha Vardhini told her parents that she got through the examination. However, the parents later came to know that she had failed in the examination.
On Tuesday afternoon, when they returned home from work, they found her body hanging from the ceiling. In a note left behind, Harsha Vardhini apologised for her poor performance in the examination, the police said. She pledged her eyes to Swetcha Gora eye bank and appealed to her parents to donate her kidneys to the needy.
The parents fulfilled her last wish by allowing the eye bank to remove her corneas. The body was sent to the Government General Hospital.
