HYDERABAD: The Osmania University campus was bursting at its seams as 12,000 students took the Scholastic Aptitude Test - 2006 conducted by Ramaiah Institute on Sunday morning. Thousands of anxious parents waited outside as their children took the examination in different examination centres.
Parents carrying water bottles and lunch packets could be seen everywhere braving an extremely sultry weather. As the students emerged from the four examination centres, there was a mad scramble and vehicular traffic went haywire.
Students were of the view that the Mathematics paper was extremely tough, while Physics and Chemistry papers were slightly `understandable.' The students are tested in their analytical skills in the three subjects. Each question paper is for 60 marks and those getting 15 marks each in three subjects stand a good chance of getting into the famed Ramaiah IIT training institute. The students came from all over the State for 125 seats of which 25 are for rural students. A total of 4,000 from Hyderabad and 8,000 from the rural areas took the four-hour examination. "Our method of teaching is quite different. It is not lectures, but dialogues and assignments that enables us to give basics to the student," Chukka Ramaiah told The Hindu .
"The test is meant to test whether the student has the skill to pursue studies under the IIT examination," he added. Last year, 98 of his students made it to the prestigious schools of Excellence in Engineering. But Mr. Ramaiah does not take credit for this, "It is not due to us that the student succeeds, but due his own industry and effort."
