VISAKHAPATNAM: The Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) has surpassed the target of 55.15 million tonnes set by the Union Ministry of Shipping.

In fact, the target was achieved two days ago, according to VPT Chairman K. Ratna Kishore, who hopes the throughput might touch 55.75 MT by Saturday morning. "It is a heartening achievement made possible by the combined efforts of the dock workers, port employees, the shippers, and stevedores. For the first time in the history of Indian ports, the VPT crossed the 50-million-tonne mark last year,'' he said.

He also said there was a slight shortfall of 3.5 lakh tonnes or so as far as iron ore was concerned but it did not make much impact on the overall performance of the port. The VPT could also get some transhipment cargo of five lakh tonnes during March, enabling it to achieve the target comfortably, he added. Mr. Kishore exhorted the workers and all others to strive hard to keep the port in the forefront.
