HYDERABAD: The historic Clock Tower has been chosen as the logo for celebrating 200 years of `Splendid' Secunderabad starting from June 3. Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy formally unveiled the logo in the presence of Tourism Minister J. Geeta Reddy and Mayor Teegala Krishna Reddy on Monday.

Talking to the media later, Ms. Reddy, also the Chairman of the Celebrations Committee, said the celebrations, which would continue till June 11, would begin with a colourful carnival from Buddha Bhavan to Parade Grounds via Kingsway. It would have 500 artistes drawn from different districts participating along with various tableau.

A festival run, vintage car rally and a treasure hunt will be held on June 4. A photo exhibition showcasing Secunderabad's evolution will be held at the Hari Hara Kala Bhavan from June 5 to June 9. Church of South India's Institute of Technology (CSIIT) School of Architecture and Planning will organise a seminar on `The Secunderabad, Past, Present and Future'.

Sports tourneys

The Minister said knockout tournaments of football and hockey for local teams would be held from June 5 to 8 apart from a festival polo match on June 5. Traditional dance and music programmes including Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam, Rajasthani Desert music and the likes would be held at the Hari Hara Kala Bhavan from June 5 to 8.

Among those performing will be Hariharan, Talat Aziz (ghazals) on June 6, `Panchatatva' concert by the trio of Pandit Jasraj, Hariprasad Chaurasia and Mandolin Srinivas on June 7. Remo Fernandes will be performing on the opening day and Daler Mehndi on the concluding day.

The Indian Air Force's eight Suryakirans will participate in the air show, to be followed by sky diving by MI-17. Hot air ballooning, paragliding and jumping will be held on June 9 and 10. All shops have been asked to offer special discounts during the nine-day celebrations while the best decorated shop will get a prize as well, the Minister said.

The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation will also be organising special tours of Secunderabad. The celebration, being taken up on a public-private partnership mode, has sponsors like Reliance, Satyam, Airtel, GMR, GVK, SBH, Hotel Green Park, Taj Group of hotels and sponsorships were still open, said MCH Commissioner Sanjay Jaju.

Deputy Mayor G. Subash Chanderji urged the development of slums to be made part of the celebrations. The festivities would, in fact, be year long, he said. The Clock Tower logo has been designed by Ramakanth Advertising Private Limited, also behind the `Happy Hyderabad' campaign. APTDC Managing Director Raymond Peter and Director of Culture A. Srikanth were present.
