All India Trade Union Congress deplores decision to close down Begumpet airport

HYDERABAD: Trade unions in the country would not take the increasing privatisation and disinvestment lying down and were getting ready to launch a sustained agitation, said Gurudas Dasgupta, MP and general secretary, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) on Friday.

He was speaking to presspersons after a meeting at the Begumpet airport by members of Airports Authority Employees' Union (AAEU) to protest against privatisation of airports.

`No difference'

The MP said the UPA Government was not "too different from its predecessor, the NDA." The economic and labour policies were undergoing further changes, affecting the interests of theworking classes. The `hollowness' of UPA's claims had been exposed on several counts, he said. Import of foodgrains had proved how wrong its agriculture policy was.

Mr. Dasgupta lashed out at the disinvestment policy, citing the Cabinet's decision on Wednesday to disinvest 10 per cent stake of the Government in the National Aluminium Company Ltd., 15 per cent in National Mineral Development Corporation and in nationalised banks.

The much-touted National Rural Employment Generation Programme, he said, was a failure because of poor allocations.

Chandrasekhara Rao, AITUC State General Secretary, and AAEU national president S.R. Santhanam participated in the talks. Mr. Santhanam said it was a pity that Government wanted to close down the Begumpet airport that had Rs. 800 crore of asset value and posted revenue of Rs. 11 crores every month.
