Not the branch, but the zeal for it matters. This was experts' advice to students atThe HinduEducation Plus workshop

HYDERABAD: It's dilemma time for the EAMCET qualified students and their parents. What branch to choose and which college to join?

With the EAMCET counselling for admissions to over 92,000 seats in 265 engineering colleges beginning on July 6, the permutations and combinations coupled with unbridled aspirations make the big choice complicated.

To clear the ambiguity of students and parents and guide them through the roller coaster ride of admissions, The Hindu Education Plus organised a workshop on `Engineering and Medical Careers' at Sri Satya Sai Nigamagamam on Monday. In attendance were a host of experts drawing the roadmap for the aspirants.

A word to parents

State Council for Higher Education Chairman K.C. Reddy, inaugurating the workshop, advised students to head for counselling with confidence and clarity.

"Do not impose your views on your ward on the choice of branch," was his advice to parents. "The branch does not matter as long as a student works hard and strives for value addition," he said.

With the economy riding high on the wings of its skilled workmanship, students are required to acquire more skills. Better quality of life defined in terms of salary and perks -- not to forget global opportunities -- was increasingly attracting students to emerging avenues in professional education.

Courses in demand

This year computer science was back in the forefront and so was civil engineering with much happening on the infrastructure front. "The demand for various courses will fluctuate based on various factors.

"If you start loving what you are studying and it will pay you rich dividends," Mr. Reddy told EAMCET rankers.

He said this year counselling would be held non-stop for 45 days concluding on August 20. Academic year for first year would commence from August 21, one full month ahead compared to last year.

Facility in universities for on-line counselling centres, including JNTU, was being readied. ICET counselling too would be held at these facilities without interruption to EAMCET counselling.

Online counselling

The request of University of Health Sciences to the APSCHE to take up medical counselling would not be a problem either because of alternative facilities for on-line counselling. However a decision was not yet taken on medical counselling, he added.

Deputy Editor, The Hindu , Hyderabad, P.K. Kurien said the newspaper had been organising EAMCET workshops for the last three years to enable students to make a right and informed choice.

This is the fourth in the series of workshops after Tirupati, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada. The caravan moves to Karimnagar on June 14.
