Political parties unable to select candidates for panchayat polls
Rajahmundry: As alliances at State and district levels have not yet been finalised, the candidates' selection has become tough for every party in the district. Ministers of the ruling party and senior leaders in opposition parties are in a state of confusion over the issue of alliances.
"Everything will be clear after June 15. We have a list of candidates with us. We are waiting for a communication from CPI (M) about contesting in Agency area," said Minister for Roads and Buildings J. Ramamohana Rao. However, he made it clear that the State-level alliance did not have any effect on local body elections and hoped that both the Left parties would join hands with the ruling party in the district.
With regard to ZP Chairperson's seat, Backward Castes form a powerful lobby in the district, particularly the Setti Baliza Gouda community which is demanding the post in both Congress and TDP. Reddy Subrahmanyam, state secretary of Sarpanches Association and Kakinada Rural ZPTC Nullikurthi Venkateswara Rao are in the race in the Congress.
Out of race
On the other hand, Yanamala Krishnudu, brother of senior TDP leader and PAC Chairman Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, is out of race as the Yadava community had little chance compared to other BCs in the district. So, Kudipudi Suryanarayana of Amalapuram is the frontrunner for ZP Chairperson's post in TDP, but other leaders are also eyeing the seat.
CPI (M) has declared that it would contest in eight ZPTCs and 75 MPTC posts. BJP is in trouble in the district as its lone MLA from Pitapuram, Pendem Dorababu is not showing interest in candidates' selection. With internal squabbles dogging the party, the BJP has not yet revealed the number of seats it planned to contest.
