VISAKHAPATNAM: Rotary Club Visakha Port City has received the Best Club gold medal and Best President award, besides eight other awards for 2005-06. The club stood first among 90 clubs in the Rotary district 3020 comprising six coastal districts from Srikakulam . The Rotary Port City President Kantipudui Venkateswara Rao has received the award from Rotary International Director P.C. Thomas in the presence of District Governor M.C. Das.
Mr. Venkateswara Rao told reporters here on Thursday that the club had been selected for the award for its service to more than 165 villages, schools and organisations. He said after former Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's call to service organisations in July last to do their bit in treatment of fevers rampant in the district, Rotary took the lead in spending Rs.30 lakhs for relief.
Following the District Governor's call, Peda Gogada in Cheedikada mandal was adopted and medical equipment, cots and mattresses provided. Repairs to temples in the villages were carried out spending Rs.75,000. Notebooks, uniforms and scholarships were distributed in 30 municipal and mandal parishad schools and 40 dental camps conducted. Twenty blood donation camps were conducted. Twenty members of the club contributed $500 each to Paul Harris Fellow recognition.
The club president said that the other awards it won were: a special award for Rotary Blood Bank, Best innovative programme for youth and Best programmes for the welfare of the physically challenged.
