Award comes with Rs. 30,000 cash prize, a citation and a memento
HYDERABAD: People of eminence conferred with "Kalaratna" awards can now use it as a prefix to their names, on the lines of `Padma Bhushan' and `Padma Sri', said Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Tuesday.
He was addressing a gathering at the Ravindra Bharati here after giving away the Kalaratna-2006 awards that were earlier called `Hamsa'.
The award comes with a Rs. 30,000 cash prize, a citation and a memento.
The eminent awardees include Dasarathi Rangacharya and Gorati Venkanna for literature, Yella Venkateswara Rao and Vittal Rao for music, Swati Somnath and G. Padmaja Reddy for dance, Bapu for painting, C.S.N. Patnaik for sculpture and Katta Suryanarayana and S. Prabhakar for folk arts.
Except Dr. Dasarathi, others received the awards from the Chief Minister.
Dr. Reddy said his Government was doing everything to recognise and encourage art and artists. It was only with the specific intent to add value to the title `Hamsa' that the name of the award was changed to `Kalaratna,' he said.
Others who spoke included Minister for Sports and Culture M. Satyanarayana Rao, Anjan Kumar Yadav, MP, Krishna Rao, MLA, Dharmavarapu Subrahmanyam, Chairman, Andhra Pradesh State Cultural Council and Arja Srikanth, Director, Culture.
