KADAPA: Leaders of all political parties supported the State Government's decision to enhance capacity of Pothireddypadu head regulator to 44,000 cusecs, at an all-party meeting here on Sunday.
The meeting, organised by Kadapa District Rythu Sangham general secretary D. Chandramouleeswara Reddy, resolved to back the Government decision to augment head regulator capacity. The head regulator capacity hike was imperative to serve irrigation needs of six districts, the leaders said and resolved to hold meetings in four Rayalaseema districts, Nellore and Prakasam districts to mobilise public opinion.
They decided to represent to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh the need for capacity augmentation after meetings at Tirupati and Anantapur.
Leaders of Congress, Telugu Desam Party, BJP, CPI, CPI(M), Kadapa District Rythu Sangham, KC Canal Ayacutdars Association, Rythu Seva Sangham, Kadapa Bar Association and other organisations expressed their resolve to actively participate in agitations to ensure the head regulator capacity hike.
Work on enhancing capacity of Pothireddypadu head regulator from 10,500 cusecs to 44,000 cusecs would be launched by December end after stopping water release to KC Canal and Telugu Ganga project, Mydukur MLA D.L. Ravindra Reddy said.
Dr. Ravindra Reddy maintained that interests of Telangana would not be affected by this.
Former Minister R. Rajagopala Reddy demanded enhancement of capacity to 75,000 cusecs. Rayalaseema had already lost Krishna Pennar and Siddheswaram projects to end up a drought-prone area, he said. KC Canal Ayacutdars Association president Maseema Rajagopala Reddy wanted Polavaram project built at any cost as it would provide assured water to projects in Rayalaseema and backed head regulator capacity enhancement.
A coordination committee would be formed to ensure that local bodies in six districts adopted resolutions supporting head regulator capacity hike. These resolutions would be later sent to the Prime Minister.
A.P. Forest Development Corporation chairman Shaik Hussain backed the Government decision. TDP State Minority Cell president V.S. Ameer Babu said the party favoured capacity augmentation and added that TDP men would participate in agitations to support the Government's decision.
BJP Kisan Morcha leader P. Lakshmi Reddy demanded construction of Siddheswaram project and backed capacity hike.
