Sarpanch Bunga Surekha alleges that she was abused in the name of her caste by panchayat secretary
TIRUPATI: The 118th birth anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar coming as it does at a time when the election campaign is at its feverish pitch, received a rather ‘over’ whelming response from leaders of all political parties.
Leaders and party functionaries vied with each other in garlanding Ambedkar statue and raising slogans. The affection displayed by leaders by way of floral tributes became so heavy that after a stage, there remained no space on the statue to take any more garlands which forced others to place the garlands on the railings of the approach ladder.
Different organizations and individuals celebrated the day in their own way. Bunga Surekha, sarpanch of the Thondavada gram panchayat, symbolically presented to the Ambedkar statue a copy of the representation she had submitted earlier to the DSP, Tirupati, with copies to Chief Electoral Officer, Hyderabad. She demanded registration of case under SC/ST Atrocities (Prevention) Act against the secretary of the panchayat for allegedly ill-treating and abusing her using the caste name for questioning the Secretary’s alleged violation of poll code.
Republican Party of India candidate for the Tirupati Assembly constituency P. Anjaiah garlanded the statue before setting out on his poll campaign. UCCRI (M-L) candidate for Tirupati Lok Sabha K. Prabhakar hit the roads with a call to vote out the Congress, the Grand Alliance and the PR.
The city unit of the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) observed the day by releasing the special edition of monthly, Hindu Nagara and held a lecture on the theme, ‘social co-existence’. RSS Leaders and other participants said that just as Valmiki and Veda Vyasa, who belonged to the weaker sections and gave to the mankind great epics like Ramayana and Maha Bharatha, Ambedkar gave the country the ‘Indian Constitution’ which was still the beacon light of India.
Girijana Vidyarthi Samakhya (GVS) cadres led by its founder-president, Vadithya Sankar Nayak pledged that they were rededicating themselves to the cause cherished by Ambedkar.
And so did the leaders of the Chittoor District unit of AP Girijana Sankshema Seva Santham.
