Housewives constitute 21 per cent of one lakh cases in India

HYDERABAD: Fourteen out of every one lakh people in Andhra Pradesh commit suicide every year.

These statistics, part of a 2004 WHO survey, which also said that housewives constituted 21 per cent of the one lakh people who die by suicide in India every year, have prompted the Osmania Medical College Doctors' Forum to launch an awareness campaign against suicides as part of the World Suicide Prevention Day celebrations on September 10.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Forum president K. Suresh said Andhra Pradesh was ninth in the country as far was number of suicides per year was concerned. The Forum will hold a camp to create awareness about prevention of suicide from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the district headquarter hospital in Karimnagar on September 10.
