Declares YSR wants to repeat `Cotton miracle'; Chief Minister says his remarks are inspirational

MAHaBUBNAGAR: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday devoted a major part of his speech to Andhra Pradesh and lavished praise on Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy saying he was walking on the path of Sir Arthur Cotton.

Addressing a large gathering after laying foundation stone for the four-laning of Nagpur- Hyderabad and Hyderabad-Bangalore sections of the National Highway 7 at Kothakota, near here, he said, "Your dynamic Chief Minister Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy is endowed with foresight and vision".

The massive irrigation programme -- Jalayagnam -- which Dr. Reddy had initiated had the goal of taking irrigation to each and every corner of the State, he said. "Sir Arthur Cotton created a miracle in the Godavari delta 150 years ago. Walking the same path, Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy wants to repeat the miracle across the entire State".

Dr. Reddy was trying to take all regions, may it be Telangana, Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra of the great State towards a "bright irrigated future", he said. "I am confident that through his efforts, Telangana, which was one of the more backward regions in the context of irrigation, is going to be one of the leading regions."

`Key State'

At another point he said the State was an extremely important State for the UPA Government in Delhi. UPA Government became strong and successful with the love and affection of the people of the State. "We are grateful to the Telugu people for this and we will leave no stone unturned in working for their rapid progress.

We will work together with Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy and under the guidance of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi to take Andhra Pradesh to a new era."

Dr. Reddy who responded to the cheers by the crowds with folded hands four times, said the irrigation projects like Nettampadu, Kalvakurthy, Bhima and Koilsagar would change the face of the drought-hit Mahbubnagar by bringing 8 lakh acres into cultivation. Meanwhile, in a press release, the Chief Minister said that his comparison to Sir Arthur Cotton by the Prime Minister was an unforgettable event in his life.

Thanking the Prime Minister for the nice words about him, Dr. Reddy said his remarks gave him new inspiration to complete the irrigation projects. In fact, Sir Arthur Cotton was his role model, he said.
