Cricketer Daniel Vettori and ex-player Chris Cairns in `Brush karo, cricket khelo' campaign
HYDERBAD: They forgot their shoes on they way from the hotel to play a couple of charity matches against scratch combinations at the Railway Cricket Stadium here.
But, definitely not their skills as Chris Cairns, former New Zealand all-rounder, and Daniel Vettori, left-arm spinner showed why they are rated so highly.
Quite apparently, the matches were not a `test' for their known prowess.
For most of those who wielded the willow, if one can say so, or rolled their arm over looked like absolute novices.
But the whole objective was something laudable and close to the hearts of the two gifted New Zealand cricketers to raise funds for a charity home in Mumbai. And the Hyderabad-leg was part of their Indian sojourn dotting Metros across the country.
That Chris Cairns smashed the first four balls he faced for huge sixes proved that his renowned hitting capability had not diminished much.
And, one of the most pleasing sights at the venue was the way both Vettori and Cairns mingled with their team mates, making them feel comfortable, even celebrating high-fives at the fall of a wicket.
By all means, the matches were not for the crowds, in fact only a select few turned up. Call it for want of publicity.
More importantly, the two seemed to enjoy their brief stay in the city. To the delight of the Hindustan Lever Limited officials, who described the whole promotional campaign `Brush karo, Cricket khelo' as an unique emotional consumer connect with the product, both Cairns and Vettori looked to be the perfect brand ambassadors.
The New Zealanders also visited the Sports Coaching Foundation at Masab Tank, which was the coordinator for the above matches, later in the evening and were pleasantly surprised at the facilities available when K. Sai Baba, general secretary of SCF, explained the features of the SCF.
