Production of 110 million tonnes by 2020 is envisaged, says the CMD
VISAKHAPATNAM: "The use of steel in the rural area has to be promoted as it will help the growth of the nation's economy," said CMD of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), Y. Siva Sagar Rao while releasing the enterprise's 2007 calendar at a function held at the plant on Saturday.
The national steel policy envisaged a steel production of 110 million tonnes in India by the year 2020. The present per capita consumption of steel was around 45 kg. But the consumption of steel in the rural area was still low at 2 kg per person.
As almost 70 per cent of the population was located in the rural areas, it was necessary to promote the use of steel in these areas, he said. There was a major role for the VSP in promoting steel in rural areas and towards this, the plant was planning to provide steel to rural areas at prices on par with the nearest metro. "Steel-intensive structures and public utility structures where steel can be used in rural areas form theme of the calendar." K.A. Naidu, D (P), H.S. Chhatwal, A.K. Banerjee, ED (P and IR), MVR Sarma, GM (T and A) and union leaders attended.
