Says no illusions about economic policies of Telugu Desam

‘Nothing wrong in cash scheme, TVs promised by TDP’

‘Friendly fights will not have an impact on GA’s prospects’

HYDERABAD: Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu has asserted that the party was under “no illusions” about the economic policies of the Telugu Desam Party.

The party broke its ties with the TDP as it aligned with the “communal BJP” earlier, but the party had decided to align with the TDP after the party had changed its policies.

“The TDP distanced itself from the BJP and it sailed with the Left during the Trust Vote as well as the Indo-US civil nuclear agreement. We think these are the proofs to show that TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu has changed,” Mr. Raghavulu said.

Participating in a Meet-The-Press programme organised by the Andhra Pradesh Working Journalists Federation here on Friday, Mr. Raghavulu clarified that his party was not against Jala Yagnam, but it was opposed to the corruption in the construction of irrigation projects. Of the more than Rs. 40,000 crore spent so far on the irrigation projects, at least, Rs. 10,000 crore was either misused or misappropriated, but the Government had failed to create additional ayacut anywhere across the State, he said.

Replying to queries, he said there was nothing wrong in the cash transfer and free colour televisions promise made by the TDP claiming that such schemes were needed to counter the adverse impact of the economic recession. Several European countries as well as the United States of America were implementing similar schemes allocating huge amounts to them, but the UPA Government failed to make adequate allocations to overcome the impact of the slowdown.

To a question, he admitted that friendly contests between the partners of the Grand Alliance became unavoidable in a few seats, but it would not have any major impact on their electoral prospects as the Congress was set to lose the elections.
