HYDERABAD: Tension prevailed at different points in the city on Thursday as an Assembly segment contestant was arrested for election code violation (later released on bail) and the convoys of Grand Alliance candidates in Hyderabad Parliamentary and Karvan Assembly constituencies were attacked.
Suspected activists of the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen allegedly pelted stones on the convoys of Grand Alliance candidates -- Zahid Ali Khan and M. Srinivas Reddy -- at Mohmmadiya Lines in Langerhouz in the evening. The contestants, along with their supporters, were taking out a ‘padayatra’ when MIM workers allegedly pelted stones damaging four of their vehicles.
The Grand Alliance workers alleged that the attack was masterminded by MIM’s Karvan candidate, Afsar Khan, who too was campaigning in the area then. By the time police rushed there, the attackers fled the place. Later, the Grand Alliance supporters lodged a complaint with the Langerhouz police who registered a criminal case against the MIM workers. The CPI(M) city secretary, P.S.N. Murthy, condemned the attack.
Meanwhile, the Punjagutta police arrested the PR candidate, N. Vijayendra, on charge of violating election code of conduct. According to Punjagutta ACP, Subbarami Reddy, the PR nominee was found campaigning in M.S. Matkha area on Wednesday without securing permission from the police. A case under Section 188 (not complying with the law promulgated by public servant) of Indian Penal Code was registered against him.
