VISAKHAPATNAM: Andhra University Vice-Chancellor B. Satyanarayana on Sunday unveiled the statue of Babu Jagjivan Ram on the university premises on the occasion of his 102nd birth anniversary.

At a meeting held later, Prof. Satyanarayana recalled the services rendered by Jagjivan Ram and B.R. Ambedkar and said that the country was considered developed only after social, economic and political equality was achieved.

AU conferred on Jagjivan Ram an honorary doctorate in 1973, which boosted the university’s prestige, he said.

Rector B. Parvatheeswara Rao, Registrar P.V.G.D. Prasada Rao, Professor of History of Sri Krishnadevaraya University P. Sudhakar, AGM of VSP S. Venkateswarlu, Dalit poet and writer and HoD of Telugu of Telugu University Yendluri Sudhakar, Dean (transport) of AU V. Veerayya, Dean (security) T. Venkata Krishna, Principals of campus colleges, research scholars and students participated. Vice-Chancellor of State Law University Y. Satyanarayana garlanded a photograph of Jagjivan Ram at a programme organised by the university and paid rich tributes to the leader. Registrar A. Subrahmanyam and staff participated.
