Several senior leaders defeated
VIJAYAWADA: With the Congress taking a drubbing in Krishna district, leaders and cadre refrained from celebrating openly in the city.
The morale of the cadre was low with the overall bad performance of the party and the defeat of several senior leaders. Workers and leaders of the party made a beeline to the house of Malladi Vishnu, the sole party candidate to win in the city, with garlands and bouquets.
Party workers turned up in strength at the house of Mr Vishnu’s house for a “ksheerabhishekam” (felicitation with milk), but the programme had to be cancelled after Mr Vishnu flatly refused the honour.
The Congress party won two seats in Vijayawada Lok Sabha constituency and three in Machilipatnam constituency.
The party candidates were relegated to the second place in Jaggayyapet, Vijayawada West, Vijayawada East, Mylavaram, Avanigadda, Gannavaram and Nuzvid Assembly constituencies.
In Kaikaluru constituency Congress candidate and sitting MLA Yerneni Rajaram Chander was relegated to the third place with the Praja Rajyam Party candidate faring better.
The party candidates who contested at Nandigama and Gudivada that have sitting TDP MLAs lost.
Sitting Congress MLAs Perni Venkataramayya and K.P.Saradhi being re-elected in Bandar and Penamaluru Assembly constituency, former RTC zonal chairperson and new face Jogi Ramesh at Pedana defeating former TDP heavy weight Kagita Venkata Rao at Pedana and another new face D.Padmajyoti defeated former TDP MLA Nallagatla Swamy Das is a small grace for the Congress.
The morale of the Congress cadre in the district is however low because three heavy weights – ministers Mandali Buddha Prasad, Pinnamaneni Venkateswara Rao and Government whip Samineni Udaya Bhanu were defeated.
