HYDERABAD: The research products and scientific innovations of the International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) help prevent land degradation and desertifaction, while providing livelihood and income security to small farmers, said its Director-General William Dar here on Tuesday.

In a press release on the eve of World Day to Combat Desertification on Wednesday, he said that land degradation and desertification adversely affect small farmers of semi-arid tropics.

“The health of the lands is the basis of our food chain and climate, and the livelihoods of our small farmers and poorest people. The positive impact of combating land degradation can come only with the development and application of good science,” he added.

ICRISAT’s focus was on integrated genetic and natural resource management which aims at growing improved crops on soils conserved through natural resource management.

The institute’s integrated watershed management strategy in India, China, Thailand and Vietnam brought about improved agronomy and improved management, the release added.
