Focus on removal of slums in towns
TIRUPATI: Eyeing ‘slum removal’ as the major route to make a town clean and green, the municipalities will now focus on urban poverty alleviation.
A training programme was conducted here on Monday for the municipal Commissioners of Chittoor, Kadapa, Anantapur, Kurnool, Nellore, Guntur and Prakasam districts, where Satya Narayana, the Additional Managing Director of MEPMA (Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas), explained the crucial role the civic bodies were expected to play in alleviation of urban poverty.
In his PowerPoint presentation, he explained the government’s resolve to make all the towns slum-free by the year 2014 and asked the municipalities to conduct a survey on the families living in the slum areas and their source of livelihood. “The survey should be scientific enough to identify the unemployed men dwelling in the slums, provide better amenities as well as a decent source of livelihood.”
T.S.R. Anjaneyulu, municipal commissioner of Nellore and also the state resource person of MEPMA, explained various schemes on the anvil and sought coordinated effort by the civic bodies to make them reach beneficiaries.
