Tapping aesthetic potential of children

HYDERABAD: A drawing class where children do not copy sample pictures but change them, build around them so as to give a background, a context. And so if they are shown sketches of fruit, they might draw fruit on a table next to the window or fruit in a picnic basket on a sunny day.

This unique art programme, developed by Global Art & Creative in Malaysia is now taught in 52 centres across India through collaboration with SIP Academy India.

“Drawing is just a tool. We teach children to be creative while using the tool,” says K. Venkatarman, Channel Head of Global Art India, which launched its 10th centre in the city on Sunday. It begins with learning to hold the pencil and colouring within the border.

They draw easy shapes like houses, clouds or trees and then finer sketches of animals and people. First each child is asked to write a story based on the theme they are shown. And then they draw, bringing the story to life with imagination and colour.

The systematic curriculum is designed to develop the aesthetic potential of children.

The foundation level for four – six year-olds spans 16 months while the basic level for seven – 15 year-olds is two years long.

“It’s very professional. After foundation they graduate to the basic level,” says Mr. Venkataraman. The full three years and four months is complete with examinations, grades and certificates.
