Sunday was bright and sunny. But the sun shone brighter for fans of Telugu actor Akkineni Nagarjuna, who descended on the city to open the new Kalyan Jewellers showroom on Mahatma Gandhi Road opposite Swaraj Maidan.

Thanks to wide publicity about the actor's scheduled visit to the city, a large crowd gathered outside the showroom to catch a glimpse of the actor. Excitement was palpable among the fans just before arrival of their ‘ever green' hero.

All whispers died suddenly when a sleek car zipped in amidst ‘oohs' and ‘aahs' by wide-eyed fans, out came the charming actor. Clad in a black T-shirt with white stripes and flaunting rare flamboyance that has earned him a huge fan-following, Nagarjuna flashed a smile and waved to the crowd.

The security personnel had a tough time controlling youngsters who seemed ready to fight any barrier that kept them away from their silver screen icon. Marking the formal inaugural of the showroom, Nagarjuna lit the traditional lamp and went around the counters.

“We expect to do good business in this city and we have plans to open showrooms in Guntur, Nellore, Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry and Tirupathi in the next few months,” said T. S. Kalyanaraman, Chairman and Managing Director of Kalyan Jewellers.

Meanwhile, not willing to disappoint his scores of fans waiting outside, Nagarjuna stopped at the main entrance, raised his hands and greeted them with “andariki namaskaram. Intha abhimanama…chaala samptruptiga undi” (I am overwhelmed by your love and affection). Even as the crowd cheered him lustily, he promised “Malli tirigi vastaanu' (I'll return to this city soon) and hopped into a vehicle.
