VISAKHAPATNAM: Five lady Naval officers have been short-listed for inclusion in the core group of all ladies skydiving team to represent India at the World Military Games (WMG) 2011, after a 15-day skydiving camp, conducted by the Indian Navy Skydiving Training Team (INSDTT), concluded at the INS Dega here on Friday.

The five were selected out of the nine, who have participated in the camp, according to a Navy press release.

Forming a lady officers skydiving team started in October last year when the Navy selected five officers and with the lead given by the Navy, the Army sought the services of the INSDTT in April to train its lady officers. Six officers had been trained by the training team’s Cdr. N. Rajesh and Lt. Cdr. M.V. Birajdar to the level of solo skydivers.

With the fresh batch of five Navy officers, the 16-member core team had been formed and it would be given advanced training in body flights and formation techniques before participating in the World Military Games. To get a feel of competition at international level, the team is also participating in the 2010 WMG.Only a few countries have fielded their ladies team in the last WMG and for the India it would be a matter of pride to have its team in the WMG 2011 and competing against the best in the world.Skydivers jump from the aircraft at an altitude of 12,500 feet, achieving a terminal velocity of 210 kmph to 240 kmph before deploying the parachute at about 3,000 feet, the navy press release explained about skydiving. During the 50 seconds of free fall, the sky-divers perform various manoeuvres.

Four-way formation, accuracy jumps, etc. are the ways the skydivers perform.
